Culture Night 2021 takes place on Friday 17th September with free events taking place all around the country. We’ve picked out a selection of fantastic family-friendly events that look really fun – take a look below!

Family Events for Culture Night 2021

Zoom Book Clinic with Children’s Books Ireland and Hodges Figgis

Culture Night 2021

Time: 4-6pm

Are you a young reader? Looking for a new series to delve into? Feeling uninspired by your bookshelves at home? Then pop into the virtual Children’s Books Ireland Book Clinic with Hodges Figgis! Chat to the Book Doctor, consult on your favourite reads and leave with a prescription for your next book, as well as a 10% off book voucher to spend in store.

Children’s Books Ireland Book Doctors will give guidance about books and ‘diagnose’ your next read. Based on an informal chat, the Book Doctors recommend excellent books for any age of young reader (0-18), supported by Children’s Books Ireland’s many reading resources.

These Zoom consultations will be 15 minutes in duration, and must be booked in advance. Due to restricted time, places will be limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. To families with multiple eager readers, please book one 15-minute consultation per child.

Animals as Messengers, Guides & Fairies – Visual Art Video Workshop

Culture Night 2021

Time: Available online from 4pm

Connect with the animal world in this online mini-sculpture video workshop for children aged 5-12 with Duffy Mooney-Sheppard.

In Irish folklore, animals often live between worlds, carrying meaning and messages. Is there an animal that you have been noticing recently? In the park, at your window or maybe in your dreams?

In this video workshop, we discover stories and wisdom associated with native animals and create a miniature sculpture of the one which carries a special meaning to you.

Live Online Workshop for Families: Block Printed Textiles

Culture Night 2021

Time: 4-5pm

Use fun and experimental block printing techniques to create your own textile patterns diary or sketchbook with this live online workshop from Chester Beatty Library.

Learn about traditional designs and printing techniques from the Edo period and make your own patterned textiles at home.

The Minecraft World of Rossmore Castle

Culture Night 2021

Time: 7-8pm

The grand, imposing structure that once overlooked the sloping hills of Rossmore Park has now been rebuilt to amazing detail using the Minecraft platform.

Monaghan County Museum, alongside the EA AmmA Centre in Armagh, will host a workshop where participants will explore the Rossmore Minecraft World. They will have the opportunity to tour a full 3D replica of Rossmore Castle, plant a pollinator garden in the Walled Gardens, locate the Drumlin Giants in The Giant’s Trail, combine chemicals in the Gas House, explore the hydraulic ram and dam and much more!

Children’s Museum of Puppets

Time: 4-7pm

Ahoy – Calling all budding artists and designers!

Model boats made by Jack B Yeats, salt water ballads and sea-faring adventure stories are the inspiration for this exciting new interactive installation for children, to be launched on Culture Night at The Model, Sligo.

One of the gallery spaces has been transformed into a high sea adventure and the call is out for all children to help transform this space into a pirate haven. Come in on Culture Night and design your own pirate puppet with a team of artists – and help make a colourful and vibrant museum of puppets.

If you would like to make a pirate puppet in advance to drop in on the day, you can follow the puppet-making video workshop at and there will be on open workshop on site.

Free Entry to the GAA Museum

Culture night 2021

Time: From 5pm, with entry every half hour.

This Culture Night, immerse yourself in our unique sporting heritage. Get ready to learn the spine-tingling story of Gaelic games, charted from ancient times to the present day in our GAA Museum at Croke Park, and the two floors of Gaelic Games exhibits and artefacts.

Get a chance to see the original Sam Maguire and Liam MacCarthy trophies, as well as footage of the greatest players of all time in action in the Hall of Fame. Allow our Museum to vividly bring to life the GAA’s contribution to our cultural, social, and sporting heritage.

Free the Birds

Culture night 2021

Time: 4-10pm

Free the Birds is an interactive art project led by Muhammad Achour (Places of ARcture) that features works created by young people under 15 from Syria, Tanzania, and Ireland. Over 4 weeks, live online origami workshops and coaching sessions led by artists Timi Tenczler and Julia Thomaschki will take place in art centres in Syria, Tanzania, and Liberty HQ in Tallaght.

The participants, many of whom have experienced a great deal of trauma throughout their lives, will be taught how to make origami birds. They will write messages on the birds, which are going fly all the way to Ireland to be exhibited on Culture Night. In expressing their wishes for the future, they will let go of old traumatic experiences by crafting the birds that will take them away, and carry their messages across the world. Join in to appreciate this international, collaborative effort.

Visit EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum

Time: 6-10pm

Come and see the most EPIC museum in Dublin this Culture Night! Winner of Europe’s Leading Tourist Attraction at the World Travel Awards 2019 and 2020, EPIC will take you past the stereotypes and examine how such a small island has made such a big impact on the world.

This interactive journey stretches across 20 galleries and takes you through space and time to learn why Irishness is celebrated across the world and about Irish history and culture, told from the perspective of those who lived it.

You will discover why people left, see how they influenced the world they arrived at, and experience the connection between their descendants & Ireland today. Immerse yourself in the stories of some of the most remarkable tales of sacrifice, endurance, adventure, and discovery the world has ever known.

Workshops at Shandon Art Studios

Culture Night 2021

Time: 4-9pm

Shandon Art Studio invites adults and children to participate in free pottery workshops in a creative space and see some of the samples of art and craft work made by the artists.

The Studio will also be open for tours and will host a make your own hanging pottery decoration class. These decorations will be fired in the studio’s kiln and available for pick up at a later date.

The Misneach Mural

Misneach being the Irish word for ‘courage’, the people of Killorglin, County Kerry will be invited to engage with this inclusive piece of art.

Building a temporary outdoor public “Paint & Print” abstract mural, the aim is to provide a blank canvas for all members of the community to showcase their imagination and creativity. These 4 separate pieces will be hung on display at K-FEST (Killorglin Arts Festival).

Meet Independent Comic Artists at Dublin City Comics

Dublin City Comics is back with a showcase of local artists and writers who have made and published comics. Visitors can browse and buy their works.

Meet the creative teams to discuss how they got into it, the fascinating process of creating a comic, and perhaps get some hints and tips for if you ever wanted to try your hand at making one yourself!

Childhood Nostalgia Origami

Culture night 2021

Time: 6-8pm

Take yourself and your children back in time to when you made your own paper crafts. From fortune tellers to paper airplanes and everything in between, come and join Rebecca Lyons online as she brings you back to your childhood by creating these nostalgic crafts. A fun evening down memory lane awaits all ages!

Meet the Leaflings with Niamh Sharkey and Owen Churcher

Time: 5.30pm and 6.45pm

Among the branches and roots of some of our planet’s most important inhabitants live the leaflings, the secret guardians of the trees. They live in trees all over the world, from giant redwoods in California to cherry blossoms in Japan. They can teach us a lot about the trees they protect and how special they are.

Get a sneaky behind the scenes look at how Niamh and Owen made their upcoming book, A Field Guide to Leaflings – find out where they get their ideas, peek inside Niamh’s sketch books, then participate in a fun drawing workshop!

Mother Tongues

Culture Night 2021

Time: 4-8pm

Drop into Rua Red Arts Centre in Tallaght, a contemporary art space, which will temporarily host the touring Interactive Museum of Languages for Young Audiences. Since 2017, Mother Languages has promoted multilingualism in Ireland. Children can join the Mother Tongues team to play games and learn about the many cultures of Tallaght!

Through artwork, sculptures, and spaces, the exhibit creatively encourages children to interact with different letters and alphabets across languages. This fun, immersive experience promotes both creativity and linguistic/cultural diversity.

Comhaltas Craobh Osrai Irish Entertainment Show

Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, Craobh Osrai, will present a one hour entertainment show of Irish music, song, dance and storytelling, featuring members of our junior and senior entertainment groups.  Ideal entertainment event for all the family.

Pitch’d Circus and Street Arts Festival

The fourth edition of Circus Factory’s Pitch’d Circus Street Arts Festival returns this year with the theme Art Refracted. Let’s imagine what art, culture, festivals and gatherings look like now, and in the future. Circus Factory aims to elevate Circus and Street Arts through innovation and creativity, and street festivals are an age- old activity that bring all walks of life together.

The event is a space for friends to catch up, stand awestruck at acrobats flipping and tumbling, or even a place to scratch your head at some silly walkabout characters. Features pop-up performances of Tumble Circus’ “Cycle Circus” and Tom Campbell’s “Rubbish Performance”.

A Night at the Drive-In with Clones Film Festival, Monaghan

Come along for an evening of outdoor movie screenings in the fabulous, spacious, luxurious comfort of your own car. We will be showing a children’s movie and an adult movie in the Clones credit union car park on culture night.

Do Fish Ever Get Seasick? – Ulysses for Kids

You’re never too young to be introduced to one of the greatest books ever written – and that’s exactly what the James Joyce Centre will do with Ulysses for Kids!

Through performance, song, and storytelling, the child characters in Joyce’s Ulysses are brought to life and elements at the heart of the book are explained – the importance of curiosity and learning to respect others; the trickiness of family relationships and love; and why everyone needs a place to call home.

This performance lasts around 50 minutes, and all ages are welcome.
