The Festival of Curiosity is Dublin’s annual festival of science, arts, design, and technology. This year it runs from July 22nd to 25th and you can expect digital, virtual, and blended formats for people of all ages to explore and discover science, arts, design, and technology in playful new ways so we can stay safe while staying curious.  There will be a mix of free and paid events and we have picked out 5 fun events suitable for families to enjoy and to see the full programme of events, click here.

Highlights For Families From The Festival of Curiosity 2021

#1. The Secret world of Animal Sleep

The Festival of Curiosity 2021 Animal Sleep workshop

From birds that take micro-naps mid-flight to dolphins who snooze underwater, activating only half of their brains. Join us as we examine the myriad ways animals sleep in this beautifully animated series from The Smithsonian Channel.

The whole family can tune in to watch the show online, join us for a behind the scenes talk with the team who made it and drop into our online stop-motion workshop with the animator of the series, Aurélie Beatley.

#2. Kaleidoscope Online Concert

The Festival of Curiosity 2021 Kaleidoscope

Inspired by research into how a baby’s sense of sight develops and how they instinctively begin to categorise colour, watch as a multi-coloured Kaleidoscope is brought to life for you and your baby In this 30 minute live interactive concert over zoom. Suitable for all ages.

#3. Build Your Own DIY Rocket

This exciting and explosive online family workshop will show you everything you need to know to make lots of different types of rockets so budding astronauts can take off for an outdoor adventure this summer.

Scientist and television presenter Mark Langtry will teach you how to make and launch your own rockets from the ‘Explorium launch pad’ at the foothills of the Dublin mountains.

Dates & How to Book: The DIY Rockets workshop is a free virtual event at 2.30pm – 3.30pm on Saturday July 24th and children must be accompanied at all times online by an adult. Tickets can be booked here.

#4. Limitless Creativity – How to Create Impossible Things With Futuristic Tech

Join full-time mad scientist Lucas Rizzotto for this 90 minute interactive online workshop. We will explore how to get started using emerging technologies like VR, AR & A.I as well as how you can break down your impossible ideas into projects you can do today.
Join mad scientist Lucas Rizzotto for a limitless creative workshop where you will explore using VR, AR and AI to bring an impossible project to life!

#5. StrongWomen Science Circus Show

The Festival of Curiosity 2021 StrongWomen Science

StrongWomen Science is a circus science show for children and families starring two women scientists turned circus performers. Aoife Raleigh is an engineer, Maria Corcoran an environmental scientist.

Ever wanted to know how you balance a chair on your chin, if you can juggle liquid, or how circus performers eat fire? StrongWomen Aoife and Maria reveal the scientific secrets behind their astounding tricks. In a fun, lively and fast-paced family circus performance, find out how jugglers, acrobats and hula hoop artists use science to create their amazing acts.
