3. Paddington

paddingtonPaddington, the marmalade loving bear, has grown up deep in the Peruvian jungle with his Aunt Lucy who, inspired by a chance encounter with an English explorer, has raised her nephew to dream of an exciting life in London. When an earthquake destroys their home, Aunt Lucy decides to smuggle her young nephew on board a boat bound for England, in search of a better life.

Arriving alone at Paddington Station, Paddington soon finds that city life is not all he had imagined – until he meets the kindly Brown family. They offer him a temporary home whilst he searches for the explorer who impressed Aunt Lucy all those years before.

But when Paddington catches the eye of a sinister, seductive taxidermist, it isn’t long before his home – and very existence – is under threat…

This is a recent release, but we think this will become a family classic for years to come. Equally as enjoyable for adults and kids – a must for any family movie collection.

6. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

willy wonkaBased on a Roald Dahl classic book “Charlie & The Chocolate Factory”, this is the story of Charlie Bucket who wins one of five golden tickets for a tour to the mysterious nearby chocolate factory.

The Chocolate Factory owner is the quirky Willy Wonka (played by Gene Wilder), who leads the five young winners on a thrilling and often dangerous tour of his factory.

Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, by Tim Burton, and starring Johnny Depp, was released in 2005, with lots more colour and effects, but we still prefer this original.

In our opinion, this is the version that should be in your family collection – great music and a wonderful heart-warming tale.

7. Toy Story

Toy StoryA cowboy doll is profoundly threatened and jealous when a new spaceman figure supplants him as top toy in a boy’s room.

When Andy’s family moves to a new house, Woody and Buzz must escape the clutches of naughty neighbor Sid Phillips and reunite with Andy and the rest of the toys.

We also love Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3, proof that sequels can be as good as the original! The Trilogy is a definite for your collection.

8. The Jungle Book

jungle bookA classic Disney animated film based on Rudyard Kipling’s book, and with great humour and wonderful songs, is a must for any family movie collection.

Bagheera the panther agrees to help Mowgli return to the man village, however Mowgli stumbles into the carefree bear Balloo and refuses to leave the jungle.

A family classic – a wonderful story with memorable tunes. Altogether now “I’ve got the Bare Neccessities, the simple Bare Necessities…”

9. Despicable Me

despicable meArch villain Gru hatches a plan to steal the moon with the help of his army of little yellow minions.

But nothing in his calculations and groundwork has prepared him for his greatest challenge: three adorable orphan girls who want to make him their dad.

An absolute must for any collection, we love the minions and the softening of Gru’s heart. Despicable Me 2 is also a winner.

9. Back to the Future

Back to the FutureCalifornian teen, Marty McFly, is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his friend, Dr. Emmett Brown, and must make sure his high-school-age parents unite in order to save his own existence.

Marty then has to return to his own time and save the life of Doc, all with the help of the time travelling DeLorean car.

This excellent first adventure in the series stars Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd.

A worthy addition to any family movie collection. What’s not to love about Huey Lewis & The News singing “The Power of Love” ?!

10. Star Wars

Star WarsLuke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a wookiee and two droids to save the universe from the Empire’s world-destroying battle-station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the evil Darth Vader.

And this is just the beginning (or half way through it before it begins even earlier) starring Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher.

We are showing our age here, but we prefer this original Star Wars movie (now called number IV), which we think is arguably the best.

Kids will no doubt enjoy the entire series, and with Episode VII to release late 2015(with lots of the original cast back), we can enjoy all over again in the big screen!
